Speaking of Los Angeles, the unified school district there in 2013 awarded a massive contract to Pearson and Apple. The deal was intended to provide every one of the 640,000 students in the nation’s second-largest school system with an iPad loaded with Pearson software. It would have cost hundreds of millions of dollars—just for the iPads and software.
