Among the most respectable promoters of this idea was Jeffrey Masson, a slick, Sammy Glick–ish young historian of psychoanalysis who worked for the Freud Archives at the Library of Congress. In the early 1980s, his book The Assault on Truth declared that “nobody had lied to Freud” when they’d described sexual abuse; rather, the original therapist had simply refused to believe his patients.
