Perhaps it should be the other way around—that it might be good for people to occasionally be a little bit bored? To refrain from plugging themselves in. To stop and wonder about what it is that we are actually doing.
The problem with achieving success with an app is that the service not only creates addiction—it fosters isolation as well. The basic business model of Twitter and other such social networks is to create a need for you to use the app, which the same app should then fill, but only temporarily.
You cannot wait for it to get quiet. Not in New York, nor anywhere else. You must create your own silence.
