Published in January 1956, it was called: “How Dulles Averted War.” The theme of the article was that foreign policy under Eisenhower and Dulles had not been merely a bland continuation of past (cowardly) policies, as some critics had charged, but that Dulles, backed by the atomic weapon, had walked to the very brink of war, had stared down the country’s enemies, and thereby brought back an otherwise unattainable peace.
