In Mississippi, the most reactionary of the Southern states, the resistance to integration was immediate and overwhelming on the part of whites. The moment the Supreme Court ruled in Brown, the existing white power structure moved to defy the law. White Citizens’ Councils, often made up of the most respectable people in town, were formed to stop any attempts to integrate the schools.
