“Because a man can’t live without his heart. And you, pretty girl, are my heart.”
He didn’t need to tell me twice. “I love you, Hendrix. From here until the end of time, I love you.” Chest to chest and with the tip of his nose touching mine, he then whispered the sweetest words I’d ever heard. “I love you too, Maddie. I always have and I always will.” My heart melted.
Eyes locked on mine, he continued. “And this”—he pressed his other hand over the place where my heart strummed wildly in my chest— “is the most beautiful thing about you. This right here, pretty girl, is worth more than all the gold in the world.”
Daddy may have been angrier than a hornet but Grandmama was madder than a puffed toad.
“Love you too, sweetheart. More than all the stars in the sky.”
“Lead the way, Maddie.” My body froze, and my mind reeled. Push the memories back. Deal with them later. “Madelyn. My name is Madelyn.” “Oh yeah? What happened to Maddie?” I shouldn’t have said anything. I should have kept my mouth shut. But I didn’t. Instead, I replied with, “She died.”
It was the truth.
“I’m not arrogant, Cap, but I know Maddie, and I know what we had. What we still have. Love like ours? That shit doesn’t just die. It may be a little broken, may even be a bit damaged, but it doesn’t just disappear, and come hell or high water, I will fix it.” I pointed at Maddie. “Because that girl right there, she’s not just the other half to my
heart, she’s the other half of my soul too.”
His head may be hollower than a Halloween pumpkin, but he's got balls bigger than any Brahma bull I've ever seen."
"Maddie, sweetheart, it takes a strong heart to love. It takes an even stronger one to love after being hurt. But you, baby, you've got a heart forged from a fire. A heart of steel. Use it.”
Memories are hard to escape, and they have a way of suffocating the life right out of you."
