If one experiences oblivion daily – and for an enormous portion of the day, at that – should it not be familiar territory? I was wrong about this, of course. Some species have a more passive reaction to death than others – I am thinking here of the Laru, with their total lack of funerary customs – but sleep or no, all fear it. All spend lifetimes trying to outstretch its grasp.
