The most plausible answer is white trauma. At a corporate level, it’s traumatic that a country that aspires to be a place of equality for all people did this to its own citizens. And the risk of trauma is high at a personal level. Once we open up this history, who knows what else we’ll find? I think of a white friend who came from a long line of preachers and the anxiety he felt about exploring his lineage.
