The plan marked the start, and only the start, of a long campaign of deception and subversion in an effort to destroy Castro and his regime. Certainly the plan did not yet envision an amphibious landing on Cuban beaches of the kind that was eventually attempted at the Bay of Pigs in April 1961 in Kennedy’s first months in office. However, it put into motion a planning structure that led directly to that botched and tragic event.
