Lansdale met the head of state at a September 21, 1965, dinner arranged by the influential bureaucrat Bui Diem, a future ambassador to Washington. As an icebreaker, Lansdale was asked to recount his relationship with the legendary Cao Dai warlord Trinh Minh Thé, who had died in the battle of Saigon in 1955.
