But there is another way to interpret the plural. I suggested earlier that Jesus’s exorcisms depict a clash of two kingdoms, the kingdom of God and the kingdom of demons. When Mark has the demon respond to Jesus in the first person plural, Mark may want to tell his readers that what Jesus confronts in this particular exorcism is not merely an individual demon but the entire demonic world.
