One detail in the description of the demon is noticeable. When the demon first speaks to Jesus, he refers to himself in the plural. “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us?” (1:24). And when a little later the bystanders in the synagogue comment on Jesus’s authority, they, too, speak of “unclean spirits” in the plural (1:27).
