Jubilees gives the story of the spirits yet another, theological twist. In this telling of the story, the demons are the cause of evil as it is experienced in daily life. While the demons do not come directly from God, their existence and their actions are nonetheless tolerated by God. After all, God listened to Mastema and granted at least part of his wish. Mastema himself, the leader of the demons, is subservient to God and can only do what God allows him to do.
