The danger is that we impose onto the text what we think demons are. Our interpretation becomes ahistorical and arbitrary, a reading into the text as opposed to a learning from the text. A more responsible interpretation of Jesus’s exorcism accounts acknowledges their Jewish setting and reads them in their proper context.
