“All of this would be gone if it weren’t for you, Scott.” “And don’t you forget it.” Scott’s tone turned teasing, but the gentleness was still there. “Hauling your big butt across half of Africa and Saudi Arabia. You know my back still isn’t right from carrying you, you big ol’ baby?” Ethan leaned his shoulder against his friend. “You saved my life.” “And you saved the world.”
Gazing up at him, Ethan’s eyes held what felt like the whole universe’s weight in love, a look so tender, so full of adoration and devotion, and all for him.
Finally, Daniels spoke. His voice was choked, but he looked Ethan dead in the eyes. “I’ve never met a better man than you, Ethan. Swear to fucking God.”
Faisal, my God. Even after all this time. I still melt when I hear your voice.
The door was open, and Sergey realized his mistake as soon as he poked his head through the door. Sasha Andreyev was awake. His head popped up from the newspaper he’d been reading by the light of the single desk lamp when he heard Sergey’s shoes squeak. They stared at each other, frozen, for a long moment.
Sasha’s tears rained down on Sergey’s white shirt, but he stroked his hand up and down Sasha’s arm. Sasha’s head fell to Sergey’s shoulder, tears still falling as he breathed shallowly through his mouth and squeezed his eyes shut. Sergey rolled his head back, resting it on the top of the metal headboard. He would dare tomorrow. He would speak. If it was the last thing he did.
“Loving you will never be a mistake to me,” Faisal finally said. “If you believe our love is a mistake, then that is your burden to bear.” His voice, as always, was soft and gently accented thanks to his private English tutors in Riyadh and his Oxford education. It tore at Adam’s heart, always. The tenderness containing a core of ferocity, a hidden fire that rivaled the sun.
‘As always, I will endlessly pray until I hear your voice again and I know you are safe. May Allah watch over you, azizy.’ Azizy. My darling.
“I love you, Adam,” he said. “I never stopped loving you. Ever.”
“When God designed your features and joined your brows/Paved my way, then trapped me with your gestures & bows/United the knots of my doing and of my budding heart/Fate convinced me to be enslaved to thee.”
He was worthless as a man. Utterly, absolutely, worthless.
“So, he recites poetry to you by candlelight and you fuck up his jet and bring him dead bodies?”
“If you love Faisal. Really love him. Don’t let anything stop you two. Don’t let anything get in the way. You never know how much time you have together.”
He scowled at Elizabeth. “Madam President. Permission to accompany this Goddamn idiot?”
