French sociologist Émile Durkheim claimed that “nearly all great social institutions were born in religion.” British historian Arthur Toynbee similarly asserted that “the great religions are the foundation on which great civilizations rest.” The relationship between the gods and governments would thus partly determine the shape of subsequent emerging civilizations.
