Lou Salomé... He *needed* her to reject him, or she would have been a mortal and attainable love which he probably would have ruined. By rejecting him, she caused him pain, 'hatred and love,' which caused him suffering, which he needed for a mania creation surge. (Unfortunately, tinged with misogyny.)
