When we think of James Cook, it is vital to think of him in his historical context. He was a bright boy born into a family of farm laborers in a discouragingly stratified and unfair society. With his limited education, options were extremely few. He saw that the Royal Navy might be the place for him, because of its relative abundance of opportunity and his enthusiasm for the sea and adventure.
