The European Union is very far from the most pessimistic predictions of rapid decay and collapse, and those who bet on those outcomes will certainly be proven wrong. It is, however, faced with a world for which it is not prepared, a world where it must meet rivals and competitors that, for the first time in modern history, are on the same level of historical development while showing no sign of converging with European values.
