I felt oddly hollow. No more funny one-liners. No more tortured Latin. No more off-color jokes. It had been moving to this moment for a while, but it still made me feel empty.

“This isn’t working,” I growled. Her eyes sparkled. “You should try calling, ‘Here, kitty, kitty, kitty.’” “I will kill you and nobody will find your body.”

“He bit Andrea?” “Mm-hm.” “Ankle?” “Shin, actually. She said his teeth scraped bone.” “Good bite,” Derek said. Curran grinned wider. It was good that Jim wasn’t here. They would probably high-five.

My son shrugged the shreds of his clothes off himself and showed Robert his lion fangs. “Rawrrawrrr!” “Is he challenging me?” Robert’s eyes sparkled. I put my hand over my face. “Rawrwrwa!” “That’s the most adorable thing I’ve ever seen.”

Curran loomed next to Teddy Jo. His eyes had gone completely gold. I hadn’t even heard him come in. “Uh-oh,” Conlan offered. Teddy Jo realized that now would be a very good time to stop talking and clamped his mouth shut.

I lived with a former Beast Lord. My husband hit me with the alpha stare just this morning, after I told him that I was throwing his old T-shirt away. Apparently, as long as it had an intact collar, he considered it a usable garment, no matter how many holes it had.

Saiman took a deep breath, as if he were about to jump off a cliff. “I’ll examine it gratis.” I pinched my arm. A hint of the old Saiman’s arrogance crept into his eyes. “Really, Kate, this is childish.” I turned back to the kitchen and called out, “Saiman is here and he wants to help us for free.” Derek clamped his hand to his chest and dropped to the floor. “Oh gods!” Julie waved her hands. “Hide the children. The Apocalypse is coming. The werewolves are fainting!”

Suddenly I felt homesick, not for the house but for a different time and a different me. Not-in-charge-of-anybody me. Not-protecting-the-city me. Not-wife me. Not-mom me. Just me.

“Is he silver?” I asked. Nobody said anything. “Is he silver?” I repeated, raising my voice. “Yes,” Julie whispered. I got up, turned my back, and walked away from him.

Hugh was the closest thing to a brother I had. We were both raised by Voron under Roland’s shadow. We were both trained to kill and expected to obey without question. We both would’ve done anything for our “father’s” approval. We were both found wanting by Roland, each of us a disappointment. He had no use for us unless we served him.

“He fucked with my head.” “He fucks with everyone’s head. Yours more than most. For all it matters, you’re his son. You’re fucked up enough to be.” He barked a short laugh. “Face it,” I told him. “We are damaged siblings.”

“This won’t be the last time,” he said. “Not if I can help it,” I told him. “I promise you,” he said, his voice low, almost a snarl. “This won’t be the last time. Do you trust me?” “With everything.” “It won’t be the last time,” he swore.
