Public meetings were banned so there were no big crowds, just many people in the streets buying newspapers and waiting for results. There were plenty of armed police about, and sentries at Hindenburg’s door. Occasionally a police car would dash by with a group of police in it holding rifles and bayonets and a bugler blaring furiously for the traffic to clear aside. Afterwards came a whole horde of cars, cycles and motorcycles, all eager to see the fun. I think they rather like all this, though the position is undoubtedly desperate.
