‘They are really not able to afford to return the hospitality shown to them by foreigners but, besides this, they are no doubt rather afraid of the reaction which a photograph of a big banquet might have on officials whose salaries they are cutting … the plenturous [sic] feasts offered by Jewish bankers, which have hitherto been a feature of the Berlin season, will not be given this year.
