This woman seems to see herself in the disciples. They are slaves as she is a slave, her religious proclamation somehow matching their word. This, however, is a sick optic. The slaveries are not the same, yet they exist in the same world and can be and have been historically easily confused. One great danger for the disciples here is precisely such confusion. Repeatedly the church has confused its obedience with the obedience of those enslaved, imagining the ordered and organized life of a Christian or a community to be a similitude to a slave body or a slave plantation.
