You have taken my head But not my faith
‘If I am silent, it is said that I have no wisdom If I talk, it is said that I talk too much If I sit, I am told I am a guest who is not welcome If I leave, I become a deserter If I bend my head, they say I am afraid I cannot do anything that brings me peace Only you, O Lord, can restore my honour Now and for ever.’
‘No man can bow the head That the sun holds up And the moon raises Lips that know the ocean Thirst not for praise No man can bow the head Whose eyes Have seen the skies.’
But how can there be peace outside when there is no peace within?’
‘Forgiveness, Nanak taught, is infinitely more powerful than any weapon. So why do we still fight?’
Jo Bole So Nihaal, Sat Sri Akaal!’ (He who utters the name of the Almighty, that person is ever fulfilled.)
instructions of Guru Tegh Bahadur on sexual matters: ‘As long as you live, love your wife more, and ever more. Never go near the wife of another man, even in your dreams. Never ever covet another man’s wife. To desire the love, or to love, another man’s wife is like a sharp blade—it is to invite death into your body. To make love to another man’s wife is to embrace death. There are those who think themselves very clever by making love to another man’s wife—in the end, they will die like dogs. And so I say unto you,
Par nari ki sej, bhul sapne hun na jaiyo.’
Guru Gobind Singh taught the Khalsa: ‘If you must be a monk Be like this Let your own home be the forest And your own heart, the monastic recluse Eat less, sleep less Teach yourself to love, have mercy and forbearance Be mild, be patient Bear no lust, or wrath Nor be greedy or obstinate.’
Man stands against even the so-called authority of God. What is God but the best in man? What is God but the highest reason? Why shouldn’t man, then, stand against even the authority of God if it goes against the laws of inquiry and reason?
