There are very many areas of mathematics where problems arise which are not recursive. Thus, we may be presented with a class of problems to which the answer in each case is either ‘yes’ or ‘no’, but for which no general algorithm exists for deciding which of these two is actually the case. Some of these classes of problem are remarkably simple-looking.
