They let us all sleepwalk to the end of the world for the sake of ad revenue. Don’t get me wrong, I know it’s not just the media who should shoulder the blame, far from it. It’s all of us. It was our entire damned short attention span culture that sent us marching towards disaster. It was our complacency. Our arrogance. The shared delusion that our place at the top of the food chain was ordained by God and could never be challenged.
Without the support of the people, for every enemy you destroyed two more would rise up in their place.
Just as we’d done several times in our history we chose the politics of fear over hope, simply because we learned that fear was easier to sell.
We knew that it’s easier to control people when they’re scared. We knew that if we could make voters afraid of their own shadows we could sell ourselves as their protectors, and we quickly learned that this was by far the easiest path to reelection, and the easiest way to squeeze a few extra dollars in donations out of you.
