We chose to make you suspicious of immigrants, even though we knew that statistically you had little to fear from them, and we chose to make you terrified of losing your guns, even though absolutely nobody with any power really wanted to take them from you, not even a little bit.
We knew that it’s easier to control people when they’re scared. We knew that if we could make voters afraid of their own shadows we could sell ourselves as their protectors, and we quickly learned that this was by far the easiest path to reelection, and the easiest way to squeeze a few extra dollars in donations out of you.
opening up politics to whomever could most effectively sell their own brand of fear to the voters, and as it turned out some pretty unsavory characters truly excelled in that arena.
See, he was trying to teach us that we policed by consent, not force. That’s where our power really came from. We only had authority because the public allowed us to have it, and without it we were just a bunch of assholes in costume, know what I mean?
I’ve seen one or two in my time, guys who just have faces that seem to be missing a fist.
