Carnegie’s workers died and were injured in shocking numbers; they worked twelve-hour days in brutal conditions, six and eventually seven days a week. They worked amidst open furnaces, molten iron and steel, unstable stacks of beams and ingots, and exploding machinery. In the summer, the mills themselves might as well have been furnaces.
