This became the AFL’s controversial doctrine of “more.” More expanded for Gompers so that by the end of the 1890s it meant “better homes, better surroundings, higher education, higher aspirations, nobler thoughts, more human feelings, all the human instincts that go to make up a manhood that shall be free and independent and loving and noble and true and sympathetic.
