She looked around her tiny apartment. Clean but obviously secondhand furniture she’d acquired from Goodwill stores and curbs on garbage night. Postcards and cheap prints she’d framed to give some personality to her living area, and one really nice painting that had been a gift from Portia. Like most of her life, her interior decoration had been borne of other people’s scraps.
“When disease strikes, it’s always the most vulnerable populations that are hit hardest. I want to do research that helps make the world safer for them.”
“This city is held together by hope and insomnia,” she said. “Who needs infrastructure?”
Apparently, oh-sure-I’ll-do-that Ledi had been incinerated by the flames of her frustration and I-wish-a-motherfucker-would Ledi had risen from the ashes.
“It’s hard losing a friend,” Ledi said quietly. “If it’s your significant other, you’re allowed to grieve. But people act like best friends are a dime a dozen, and if you lose one you can just replace them with another.”
