A pretty girl could express shock and distress if someone saw her bare torso, but privately she would be pleased if the reaction were favorable.
As a kid, I never realized quite how terribly sexist this author is. I might make it through this book. But I'm definitely not re-readjng any of the others. Did this stuff get into my head? I mean, did it in any way shape my perception of girls and women? Ugh.
