This is a material originally developed by the US military for the tail wire hooks on naval jet fighters. As an industry we don’t tend to be inventors of new materials, but we are very good at using them aggressively, and this was an example of that practice at work. It’s funny how things have changed. If you go back to the 1950s and 1960s, things like disc brakes were developed in motorsport and found their way onto road cars.
