Whatever formal ceremony he might have gone through, Joseph had never acknowledged one of them before the world. This was her great triumph and she made the most of it. Her four sons clung grimly to their mother’s word, despite the sworn testimony of women whom Joseph had loved and of the guards who had shadowed him when he paid nocturnal visits to their homes.
