A bird sang its morning song, followed by another joining in. The two chirped their duet, echoing one another from several trees away. A breeze rustled the shrubs and then moved upward, causing the branches to sway and the leaves to dance to the sound of the flowing stream.
Spartans never used bow and arrows; only hands, swords, spears, and their shields. Killing an enemy from afar was a cowardice action. A real man defeated his opponent up close so that he could feel the blood splatter on his hands from the kill.

“Eryx, look at me.” When he did not obey, I grabbed his chin and forced him to. “A man without fear is not brave. Bravery comes from being afraid, but doing a thing anyway. To be courageous is to fear death, and yet, charge at the enemy anyhow. Fear does not make you a coward. But overcoming it makes you a man.”

We sealed the oath with a kiss, and I knew it was an indestructible thread that connected us, one that could not be severed. Not even from death.
It was lightweight, but the double-edged blade and elongated, pointed tip allowed for both slashing and stabbing.
“When you are near, it’s as if my soul reaches out to touch yours,” he spoke, moving his fingers along my jaw and staring at me with a look that made my stomach flutter. “To reconnect with a missing piece. And when we part, I leave that piece with you.”
