"Roaches in my bed, my veins, come on, come on, it's true, it's really true!" I step toward him and hold his mattress still. "Hey," I say. "I know. Let's look for them, you know? If we don't find any, we can sleep, how's that? Let's look for them together." He likes this plan so we get on our hands and knees at three in the morning and look for roaches. It takes about thirty seconds and he plops onto his mattress and goes right back to sleep.
