When he’s torqued up like that, Hanna thinks, This is what it must be like to be a junkie. That metallic craving under the myelin nerve sheaths within his elbows, like an electrical imperative, like jonesin’ for a fix that will deliver him into 200 percent of himself. In that state, Hanna commits no errors. Decision-making is smooth and instantaneous. It’s music. He’s immaculate. That’s the high and it is what makes Hanna go.

Be a new man on his own. Work out on his body and his mind—that old slogan from the joint. But true. Men of sufficient egos do exactly that, become jailhouse autodidactic lawyers, writers, better criminals, fiends of different disciplines.

Memories have half-lives.

Borders are a transaction cost in a capitalist economy. Borders create the business model and market opening that contrabandistas exploit.
