As I looked to the left and down, the steep slope disappeared into a mass of roiling, boiling black clouds. It was like looking in a clothes dryer filled with clothes turning over and over again. It was dark and rolling rapidly up the slope as if coming to overtake me. From this roiling blackness came a sickness and awful smell—a stench of death, hopelessness, and of things long dead.
