Kennedy broke the silence. “Can I ask what’s going on between you and Eli? I know he isn’t known for his cheery disposition, but he seems like he is going to explode with anger. I could feel it. And it’s mostly directed at you.” My eyes rolled up to the ceiling. “If I understood the conundrum which is Elighan Dragen, my life would be so much simpler.”

“This has nothing to do with Kennedy.” His voice strained as he tried to regain control. “This has to do with you.” Eli took in a deep breath, roughly rubbing the stubble on his head. “Ciach Ort! Have you any idea what I went through when you disappeared?” His tone was harsh and defensive. “I couldn’t feel you,” he whispered hoarsely and turned away. “I searched everywhere, thinking maybe you were only out of range, that if I went a little farther, I’d be able to feel you. I never did. Hoping you were still alive, I went crazy trying to find you.”

We drove each other crazy, but he was always the one who could pull me back from a ledge or let me do what I needed to do to get something out of my system. He seemed to understand how I worked even better than I did. He could get me riled up and calm me down. I knew what I felt for him. I was in love with him, and it was terrifying.

“I’ve come to recognize this week that you are a serious pain in the ass. I will probably come to regret telling you this, but I’ve realized I can live without you, Dragen. I just don’t want to.” A grin hinted at his mouth. “Ditto, Brycin.”
