The statistics on road accidents in Madras were presented to the public on a billboard in the Thousand Lights junction of Anna Salai. Several accidents took place, we were told, when people tried to read the figures on this giant billboard.

Many people in that crowd might have brought their cars, but if it started raining before the plane arrived, they couldn’t avoid getting drenched. Those who had arranged to come by bus or taxi because they did not own cars, carried umbrellas.
