Less celebrated, but just as important, is Facebook’s willingness to quickly back off when it gets pushback from users or the federal government. Facebook knows that its hold on users remains tenuous. Despite the considerable effort those users have put into constructing and maintaining their pages, a sexier competitor could still draw them away by the millions—just as Facebook did to Myspace.
