British psychologist Havelock Ellis coined “sexo-aesthetic inversion” (wanting to look like the other sex) and later, in 1928, “Eonism,” which referred to the Chevalier D’Eon, a member of the court of Louis XVI who, at various stages of life, lived alternately as a man and as a woman.
