Males compete with males, and then the dominant males form alliances with each other so as to improve their access to females. And then I would make these very oblique parallels to what went on in American universities,’ she remembers. ‘I was, of course, referring to male professors who, when called out for sleeping with academic subordinates, would back one another up. All through my career, these things were going on.’
