But classic rock was already established as the soundtrack for the Republican National Convention—the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was the favored local attraction that week for attendees, and a guitar was even integrated into the convention’s official logo. Weren’t these people paying attention to the lyrics to “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”? Did they know nothing about the context from which this Rolling Stones classic sprung?
