It reinforced a powerfully simplistic reading of Wilder’s work, extending her portrait of Charles Ingalls’s stoicism to absurdly heroic lengths. Its audiences were led to believe, among other things, that small-scale farming had reliably and sustainably fed American families on the Great Plains.
