Evidence suggested that the killers had preyed on paying customers seated at their table for a meal; one of the perpetrators was said to attack from behind a curtain, striking the victim in the head with a hammer. The body was then tipped through a trap door into a squalid cellar below, stripped of valuables, and concealed until it could be buried in the orchard or fields.
