On September 20, 2001, President Bush made a point of saying that our enemy “is not our many Muslim friends…[or] our many Arab friends.” But after that, many Republicans began explicitly encouraging and exaggerating fears of Muslims, especially after the election of a nonwhite president with the middle name Hussein.
