Monsters were in the eye of the beholder. And no one wanted to discover their hero was the true villain of the story.
“You’ve stared Fear in its nasty face and made it tremble. You will make it through this, Wadsworth. We will make it through this. That is a fact more tangible than any dream or nightmare. I promised I’d never lie to you. I intend to honor my word.”
“The world is neither kind nor is it cruel. It simply exists. We have the ability to view it however we choose.”
“A man of few words, I see. Perhaps it’s the size of his… weapon that’s so intimidating.”
The guard turned a severe look on Thomas, eyes widening briefly before he reset his jaw.
“You would miss me terribly and know it. Just as I would miss you in ways I cannot fathom, should we ever part.”
“You are going to dazzle them all, Wadsworth.” Thomas gently squeezed my hand before releasing it. “I cannot wait to see you outshine everyone. Myself included. Though do be gentle with me.
Pretend as if I’m wonderful.”
“We weren’t expecting a spouse.
get jealous rather easily. I want to have a duel, not raze the academy or burn it to the ground.
“You’re saying you’d like to trap me and hang my severed head above the mantle, then? That’s so utterly romantic. Do tell me more.”
Antique pages were a scent that should be bottled up and sold to those who adored the aroma.
I would not be treated as if my mind were inferior because I’d been blessed with the ability to bear children.
Before I could stop him, he lifted my hand to his lips and pressed a long, chaste kiss to it. Warmth rose from my toes to my hairline, but I didn’t pull my hand away.
My beloved Audrey Rose.”
“And this is my sister,
couldn’t help thinking of being in a similar position with Thomas.
Society at large is staggeringly obtuse. If one simply looks to others for their opinions, they lose the ability to think critically for themselves. Progress would never be made if everyone appeared and thought and loved in the same manner.”
I require equal standing and will accept nothing less.”
he was still a man.
“If I’d known the way to your heart was through dying, I’d have done this ages ago, Wadsworth.”
all. For him to lie there, playing dead, as if the mere thought of him crossing into death wouldn’t be my final undoing.
“How could you lie on that table and fake death?” I demanded. “You know. You know what happened in that laboratory. I cannot…”
This time, tears dripped over his chin.
“You are morbidly enchanting.”
his lips grazed my neck, making my skin tingle with the contact. I felt him smile into my hair.
“You’re the handsomest young man I’ve ever known,” he said.
I allowed my gaze to inspect his chiseled features, pleased by the longing that lit in his eyes when my attention found his mouth. “In fact, I’ve never wanted to kiss you more.”
chiropterologist,”
Thomas trailed his gaze up and down the length of my form, pausing until I finally cleared my throat. A bit of color rose around his collar. “Audrey Rosehips.”
If one were to cut a Corinthian column at its capital, it would come close to the decorative acanthus leaves embellishing the well’s outer wall.
“Apologies, my sweet.
“I have a feeling you haven’t invited me here for kissing. Though it never hurts to ask.”
“You’re dressed for sneaking about Dracula’s castle. Be still my thawing, dark heart. You certainly know how to make a young man feel alive, Wadsworth.”
“Focus on how handsome I am. How much you want to press your lips against mine. And definitely do not panic, Wadsworth. If you scream, I’m going to join you, and then we’re both in trouble.”
“If we weren’t about to face another terrible passageway filled with life-threatening danger, I’d take you in my arms this instant.”
His expression was now serious and measured. I stared, noting that his lashes were long and dark like the nighttime sky. His eyes were my favorite constellations to gaze at; each fleck of gold surrounding his pupils were new galaxies begging to be discovered. I’d never been fascinated by astronomy before, but now found myself an eager student.
“You’re beautiful, Wadsworth.”
my dear.”
Thomas dropped Poezii Despre Moarte along with his jaw, it seemed.
“Catch me if I fall, all right?” A smile curved his lips in a most delightful manner. “I’ve already fallen hard, Wadsworth. Perhaps you should have warned me sooner.”
“You look like you should stop saying you’re going to kiss me, Prince Dracula.” He flinched as if my words had stung him. I drew his face back to me. “And just do it, Cresswell.”
“You’ve got a dress with orchid blossoms embroidered on it. Ribbons in the deepest purple. You favor the color, but not nearly as much as I find myself favoring you.” He took a deep breath. “As to the stars? Those are what I prefer. More than medical practices and deductions. The universe is vast. A mathematical equation even I have no hope of solving. For there are no limits to the stars; their numbers are infinite. Which is precisely why I measure my love for you by them. An amount too boundless to count.”
“I am wholly bewitched, Wadsworth.”
