Another gut insult comes from the synthetic food additives that have found their way into almost all processed foods: emulsifiers. The most common emulsifiers in food use are mono- and di-glycerides, polysorbate-80 (P80), soy lecithin, and carboxymethylcellulose (CMC). Emulsifiers, too, have been found to cause increased gut permeability, alter gut bacteria, and directly contribute to colitis.
