The English version of the United Nations Charter, with all its signatures, was couriered by a special messenger to an army plane for transport back to Washington. The special messenger’s name was Alger Hiss, a member of the United States delegation to the UN Conference who would later, in 1948, be accused of spying for the Soviet Union, and would be convicted in 1950 of perjury due to this charge.
