There were not enough weapons to arm everyone, so families were told to cut bamboo stems to the length of long guns and paint them black. When the counterattack came, they were instructed to point their sticks at the enemy’s planes and helicopters, or at advancing troops. That way the Americans would believe all the citizens of Hue were armed with guns, and see the people as united and indomitable.
